Frequently Asked Questions

Click on the questions below to reveal answers to common questions about senior living options at Redstone.

Independent living, assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing each support different needs. Independent living is designed for older adults who are able to manage daily routines on their own but want a maintenance-free lifestyle, more opportunities for connection and access to helpful services if needs change.

At Redstone, independent living includes villa homes and apartments. Villa homes, available in Greensburg and North Huntingdon, include routine home and landscaping maintenance, a security system, scheduled recreational activities and fitness programming. Independent living apartments include dining, educational and social programs, fitness classes, housekeeping every two weeks, cable TV, electricity, water, sewage and trash services.

Assisted living is often referred to as personal care or supportive care in Pennsylvania. This level of living provides 24-hour assistance with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, oral hygiene, escorts to meals and activities and medication support. Redstone also has a full-time Lifestyle Coordinator dedicated to each supportive care program, providing a variety of events for residents.

Memory care is a type of personal care designed for people living with memory loss. Redstone’s supportive care memory care areas include secured indoor and outdoor spaces, guided activities and support from nurses, aides and lifestyle staff 24 hours a day. Skilled nursing provides 24-hour clinical care and rehabilitation services for people who need a higher level of medical support.

It may be time to consider senior living, personal care or a Continuing Care Retirement Community, also known as a Life Plan Community, when daily responsibilities become more difficult to manage or when additional support would improve safety, consistency and quality of life. Common signs include difficulty keeping up with home maintenance, challenges managing meals or medications, changes in mobility, repeated health concerns, increased reliance on family caregivers or interest in more convenient opportunities for connection.

Planning early gives older adults and their families more time to compare options, tour communities and make decisions thoughtfully. A CCRC can be helpful for those who want the conveniences of independent living now with priority access to additional levels of care if needs change over time. This approach allows residents to select a living environment that fits their current lifestyle while preparing for future needs.

Waitlists vary by community, location, residence type and level of care. Availability can also depend on the number of providers in the area and the type of living arrangement a person needs. Personal care and supportive care can have longer waitlists in some markets because more older adults are seeking this level of support.

Many Continuing Care Retirement Communities offer priority access to current residents when additional care is needed. This can make it more difficult for those outside the community to find immediate openings in personal care or supportive care. Families who are considering senior living may benefit from touring early, asking about current availability and learning how each community manages deposits, waitlists and priority access.
